What is amateur radio?

Who can become a ham radio operator?

Any Omani over 18 years can become a ham radio operator. All you need is a willingness to learn, a little time to study, and the ability to pass an exam. There are no age restrictions.

How do I get started in amateur radio?

To get started, you’ll need to study for and pass a licensing exam.  The Royal Omani Amateur Society offer classes and study materials to help you prepare and pass.

What kind of equipment do I need?

Basic equipment includes a transceiver (a combined transmitter and receiver), an antenna, and a power supply. The exact equipment you need will depend on your interests and the type of communication you want to engage in.

How much does it cost to get started?

Costs can vary widely. A basic setup might cost a few Omani Riyals, but it’s possible to spend much more on advanced equipment. There are also second-hand options that can reduce costs.

Do I need a license to operate ham radio?

Yes, you need a license to operate ham radio. In Oman, licensing is done by the Royal Omani Amateur Radio Society.

How do I take the licensing exam?

Licensing exams are usually administered by the Royal Omani Amateur Radio Society. 

What can I do with a ham radio license?

With a ham radio license, you can communicate with other hams locally, nationally, and internationally. You can also participate in emergency communications, public service events, and various amateur radio contests.

Can I use my ham radio in my car?

Yes, many hams use mobile setups in their cars. There are specific radios and antennas designed for mobile use.

What is a QSL card?

A QSL card is a written confirmation of a contact between two amateur radio stations. Hams often exchange these cards to confirm and commemorate their communications.

What is a repeater?

A repeater is a station that receives a signal on one frequency and retransmits it on another, extending the range of communication for hams.

How can I find local ham radio activities?

Joining a local Amateur Radio Society or club is a great way to find activities. You can also check online forums, social media groups, and national amateur radio organization websites for events and activities.

Can I talk to astronauts with my ham radio?

Yes, you can! The International Space Station (ISS) has ham radio equipment, and astronauts often use it to communicate with amateur radio operators on Earth.

How do I join an Amateur Radio Society?

You can join the Royal Omani Amateur Radio Society by visiting the society building ( Building No:1723) located at 18th November Street,  Al Athaiba.

What is Field Day?

Field Day is an annual event where amateur radio operators set up temporary stations and operate under simulated emergency conditions. It’s a great opportunity to practice skills and have fun.

Can I operate my ham radio in other countries?

Yes, many countries have reciprocal agreements that allow hams to operate in other countries. Therefore you need to check from The Royal Omani Amateur Radio Society before your visit other countries.
